DENVER, COLO. (7/30/08) -- Swallow Hill is pleased to present Planina to
their Daniels Hall stage for the group's very special 20th anniversary
reunion concert on Saturday, August 16 at 8 p.m.
Planina performs haunting and beautiful songs from Eastern Europe,
including music from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece,
Georgia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and
Ukraine, and the Sephardic and Rom (Gypsy) traditions from some of those
areas. The word Planina means "mountain" in several south Slavic
languages.
Since the inexperienced but intrepid Planina Balkan Women's Choir first
performed in 1988, some 50 members have come through Planina's
doors—some for short periods and some for many years. The group became a
mixed chorus in 1999, has released 2 CDs and a cookbook of mostly
Eastern European dishes, has studied with some stellar vocalists and
instrumentalists from Eastern Europe, made two group trips to Bulgaria,
and has collaborated with many local artists.
For this special anniversary concert, Planina welcomes back several
former members to raise their voices with us in celebration of this
thrilling music. Currently a mixed chorus of 11 members, the band is
welcoming at least 15 former members for this performance.
"For this concert, we've chosen favorites from our repertoire going back
to Planina’s beginning," said director Julie Lancaster. "Thanks to the
returning alumni participating in this concert, we are thrilled to be
able to present a few of these soaring arrangements in the large-chorus
setting for which they were originally written."
